  • Google's recent expansion of its AI Mode feature, which delivers AI-generated summaries in search results, has drawn sharp criticism from major U.S. news publishers. The News/Media Alliance, representing outlets like Condé Nast and Vox Media, accuses Google of "theft," arguing that this approach deprives publishers of traffic and revenue by utilizing their content without proper compensation.Internal documents from Google's antitrust trial reveal that the company opted not to seek publishers' consent for this feature, leaving them with the stark choice of either being included without compensation or opting out of search entirely. This controversy underscores the escalating tension between AI advancements and the rights of content creators.Read the full article here

Keep it Legal

Generally speaking, the courts have said that you can't copyright AI created work, but a new law out of Arkansas might be changing that....Arkansas recently enacted a law clarifying who owns AI-generated content. The law provides that the person who supplies the data or prompts to an AI system is deemed the owner of the resulting content (or their employer, if it’s produced as part of their job). However, the statute also specifies that any AI-generated work must not infringe existing copyrights or IP rights ncsl.org

In other legal news, the requirements to comply to the FTC's subscriptions rule was extended..... “Negative Option” Subscription Rule – Compliance Delay: If your online business relies on subscriptions or “free trial, auto-renew” offers, note that the FTC updated its Negative Option Rule (to require clearer consent and easy cancellations). Enforcement was supposed to start in May, but as of May 9, 2025, the FTC extended the compliance deadline by 60 days to July 14, 2025
